RULES AND REGULATIONS

GENERAL:
1. Contestants may enter one fiddling class and one step dance class plus one group step dance class. Fiddling and Step Dance contestants may also enter the square dance competition
2. Age as of June 30th 2007,will be used in classes where applicable.  Proof of age may  be required.
3. Contestants whom register on the day of the competition will be required to perform before the pre-registered contestants (ie. last to enter, first to perform.)
4. Contestants must be registered before their class commences.
5. Contestants must check in at the registration table upon arrival. Passes will be handed out at that time.
6. Placings will be determined by totaling the judges scores. Ties will be broken by playoff. The scores from the initial performance and the finals will be totaled to determine the winners.
7. Contestants must perform by program number.
8. Judges decision is final and the judges are not required to explain standings. Score sheets can be mailed if a self-addressed stamped envelope is left at registration.
9. In the event an accident occurs beyond the control of the contestant (ie. broken string or shoe), the contestant may start again at the discretion of the judges.
10. In classes 6, 7, 8, 9, 12, 13, 16, 17, 18 & 19 there will be finals on Saturday night where the top 3 placings will return. Winning contestants in all other classes will return Saturday night to perform.
11. Contestants under 16 years of age, returning for the finals will receive one extra complimentary pass for the finals.

SQUARE DANCING:
1. These rules are in addition to the general rules for this competition.
2. Each set shall consist of 4 couples.
3. A square dance caller may not dance and call at the same time. All sets must dance to the music provided.
4. Square dance sets may compete in one class only. Dancers may compete in only one set. However, junior square sets may enter the open class with a minimum of 5 substitutions
5. The Junior Category will commence at 7:30 PM June 29th. There will be a warm up at 6:45 PM with the compulsory caller for any sets interested. The Open Category will take place on Sat. June 30th.

  • Sets in the junior class must consist of 8 dancers who have not reached their 20th birthday as of July 1, 2007
  • Entrants in the junior caller category will be callers who are 25 years and under.
7. In the event the musicians or compulsory caller makes an error sufficient to throw the set off time, the set may be permitted to repeat the routine at the discretion of the judges.
8. Sets determined by the organizing committee to not be meeting the eligibility requirement may still compete but may not eligible for prize money or trophies.
9. At the discretion of the judges, square dance sets may be asked to dance again.
10. TIME LIMIT: Sets will have a minimum of 5 minutes and a maximum of 8 minutes to complete the optional dance and exit.
11. Each set in all classes will dance one dance to the House Caller which will be one of the compulsory calls drawn from a hat before going on stage. The second dance will be the set’s optional dance with the group’s own caller, which will immediately follow the compulsory dance. The optional dance should not contain any of the compulsory dances.
12. Canadian Old Time Square Dancing moves are mandatory.
13. Sets will be placed based on their initial performance (no finals). The winning sets may be asked to perform in the Saturday evening program. Results and prizes will be announced following the open class.

FIDDLING:
1. Contestants will play a waltz, jig and a reel, in that order, in a maximum of 3 minutes.  Contestants in the "9 & under" class will play one piece of their choice. 
2. A house pianist will be available, however contestants may use their own accompanist
3. Contestants will be judged on timing, tone, technique, and accuracy
4. Twin fiddles: Two contestants must perform 2 tunes in two part harmony, one slow tempo and one quick tempo

STEP DANCING:
1. Dancers must dance a clog, jig and a reel, in that order without stopping in a maximum of 3 minutes. Contestants in the “9 & under” class must dance a reel. Contestants in the 50 & over class will perform one dance of their choice
2. A step dance group must consist of at least 3 and not more than 5 dancers.  Contestants may dance in only one group.  Junior group contestants must all be 12 years or under as of the competition date. Only the 1st place Junior group will be invited back for a performance on Saturday night.
3. A house fiddler and accompanist will be available.
4. Group step dancers may use any dance routine (not necessarily a clog, jig or reel) and have a maximum of 5 minutes.
5. Contestants will be judged on:
  • timing  & accuracy
  • quality & variety of steps
  • overall performance & audience appeal
Group  judging will also include:
  • uniformity, style & dress
